June Reads
The Message Bible edited by Eugene Peterson - 6/2/2011
Excellent - Nonfiction
Modern paraphrase of the Bible. Took me several years to read it.
I really liked the fresh perspective that reading this paraphrase brought to my Scripture knowledge. Reading this took me much longer than I intended, but I am really glad I read the entire thing.
How to Be Perfect by Daniel M. Harrell - 6/5/2011
Excellent - Nonfiction
One church's audacious experiment in living the OT book of Leviticus
This was an interesting read. Leviticus has a bad rep among Christians. This small group, all from one church including the pastor, decided to try to live Levitically for a month. I enjoyed reading it.
The Wilder Life: My Adventures in the Lost World of Little House on the Prairie by Wendie McClure - 6/19/2011
Excellent - Nonfiction
Wendie's lifelong obsession with the Little House books drives her to learn as much as she can about Laura Ingalls Wilder and then go on a trek to most of the Little House historical sites.
Interesting from beginning to end. I think I read it all in one lazy Sunday! Some surprising revelations about Little House and Laura. I found some things about the author I could really relate to and some things that were totally NOT me, but it was all engaging!
Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery - 6/24/2011
Excellent - Classic
An orphan girl comes by mistake to Green Gables on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and finds a home.
This was a re-read for me, for book club. In fact, I think I've read it twice before. I appreciated it far more this time through. If you read Anne as a child, give it a read as an adult. I think you'll find a much richer story. If you've never read it, why not?!
The Tempest by William Shakespeare - 6/24/2011
Excellent - Classic
A sorceror who was cheated out of his title commands a tempest to cause a shipwreck.
This was a book club read. I'd never read this play before and I enjoyed listening to it. The free Librivox recording was only 2.5 hours long and a treat with so many great narrators taking the parts.
Smokin' Seventeen by Janet Evanovich - 6/26/2011
Good - Fiction
Stephanie runs afoul of Grandma Bella who puts the vordo curse on her, and dead bodies keep appearing in the empty lot where the bail bonds office used to stand.
I always eagerly await the next Evanovich and this one did not disappoint. Lots of Ranger (for those of you "in the know") made me very happy! Eighteen is coming out early - in the fall!
